The Arthur Miller Suite
Arthur Miller, (October 17, 1915 – February 10, 2005) American playwright and essayist, was a resident of the house from 1940 to 1944 with his first wife, Mary Slattery.

He was a prominent figure in American literature and cinema for over 61 years, writing a wide variety of plays, including celebrated plays such as The Crucible, A View from the Bridge, All My Sons, and Death of a Salesman, which are still studied and performed worldwide.

The Millers moved from Montague Street to the house on Schermerhorn Street, one of the first Heights houses to be remodeled and converted into apartments. The rent was $30 a month. Norman Rosten, a friend of Miller’s from the University of Michigan, also lived in the building. Miller’s window looked out on the backyard of a mosque. “I used to sit and watch the Moslems holding services, ” Miller wrote. “They had a real Moorish garden symmetrically planted with curving lines of white stones laid out in the earth, and they would sit in white robes — twenty or thirty of them, eating at a long table, and served by their women who wore the flowing purple and rose togas of the East. ”

  • Excellent (5 / 5)
Very good and quiet neighbourhood. Close to subway, and good food/cafes on Court and Smith street. If you stay here, you're almost obligated to visit Lassen & Hennings bakery on Montague st.
